About IROKO Theatre Company
We are IROKO Theatre Company. Simply known as IROKO!
We are committed to providing opportunities and environments for people of all ages, backgrounds, and abilities to fulfil their potential.
Our aim is to use African theatre approaches as a vehicle for learning and for raising the confidence and self-esteem of people of all ages and abilities. We also aim to raise awareness, preserve, celebrate, interpret and explain African heritage and culture, so that more people and a wider range of people will be able to engage with the heritage, learn about it and have informed and changed attitudes and/or behaviour towards it.
Our fundamental principle is that our work should have a meaningful impact in the lives of all the people involved in it and at the same time, it should be FUN!
Our work should:
- Educate, empower, motivate, and inspire participants.
- Strengthen their resilience and emotional wellbeing, especially those who are disadvantaged and or vulnerable.
- Reduce disadvantage and improve quality of life
IROKO is overseen by a Management Committee of volunteers who offer their skills and expertise, ranging from arts and heritage to education, children and youth services, disabilities, and finance. The Company has a full-time Administrator and a core group of performers and workshop facilitators experienced in the IROKO Methodology.
