David Olusoga OBE

David Adetayo Olusoga OBE is a British-Nigerian historian, writer, broadcaster, presenter and filmmaker. He is Professor of Public History at the University of Manchester. David was born in Lagos, Nigeria. At the age of 5, he moved to the UK with his British mother to settle in Gateshead.

David developed a passion for history, which led him to pursue a degree in the history of slavery at the University of Liverpool. He graduated with a BA (Hons) in History in 1994 and embarked on a postgraduate course in broadcast journalism at Leeds Trinity University. His first TV position was a researcher for the BBC series Western Front in 1999. He produced documentaries, including Namibia: Genocide and the Second Reich, The Lost Pictures of Eugene Smith and Abraham Lincoln: Saint or Sinner?  In 2014, he presented The World’s War: Forgotten Soldiers of Empire, Civilisations and Black and British: A Forgotten History. His shows A House Through Time and Britain’s Forgotten Slave Owners, won critical acclaim with the latter winning a BAFTA award.

David was granted an OBE for services to history and community integration in 2019.  He has featured in the Powerlist, ranking among the 100 most influential Black Britons in 2019, 2020 and 2021. He received the President’s Medal from the British Academy in 2021, for his outstanding contributions to the humanities and social sciences.
