IROKO Theatre organised a free training workshop for young people to develop their skills in oral history interviewing, video recording and editing. The training took place at Rosetta Arts in Newham on March on 14th & 15th March 2024. It was the last of the free training opportunities, provided IROKO Theatre on the Home from Home project. Supported by the National Lottery Heritage Fund, the 18-month project celebrates the contributions of British-Nigerians to the UK.
Three young people from the University of East London attended the two-day workshop. The first presentation was delivered by Judith Garfield from Eastside Community Heritage. The participants gained knowledge on oral history interviewing techniques and best practice and engaged in practical exercises to record and interview each other.
On the second day, expert documentary film maker Linzy Attenborough presented the workshop on videography film making. She highlighted the importance of building trust amongst the interviewees so that they feel comfortable sharing their stories as well as practical tips on framing a picture for the camera.
At the end of the workshop, the participants made a short film about what they had learned on the workshop and how the information will help them to interview 15 British-Nigerian Londoners who have made significant contributions to their community.
