David Oyelowo OBE, is an actor, director, and producer and one of Hollywood’s most recognised talents. He graduated from the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art and received the “Scholarship for Excellence” from theatre producer Nicholas Hytner in 1998.
Born to Nigerian parents, David grew up on an estate in South London. After moving to Nigeria with his family, David returned to pursue a stage career.
His theatre credits include playing the lead in Oroonoko ; preforming in Shakespeare’s Antony and Cleopatra (1999) and as King Henry VI in the 2001 Royal Shakespeare Company production. He later won the 2001 Ian Charleson Award for best performance by an actor under 30 in a classical play and was the first black actor to play an English king in a major Shakespeare production.
David’s screen credits are equally impressive and include the films Selma (2014) directed by Ava DuVernay, produced by Oprah Winfrey and Brad Pitt. He starred in Nightingale (2014), The Butler (2013), A United Kingdom (2016) and Queen of Katwe (2016) amongst others.
David is the recipient of a Critics’ Choice Award , two NAACP Image Awards. He has been nominated for three Golden Globe Awards, two Primetime Emmy Awards, a Screen Actors Guild Award, and a BAFTA Award. In 2016, he received an OBE for services to drama.
