The ‘Home from Home’ project aims to explore the legacies of pioneering British Nigerians in the UK and their impact on society. The project highlights and celebrates British Nigerian contributions to the cultural, political, educational, artistic, spiritual, and sporting life of Britain and London, in particular. In this interview we feature multidisciplinary artist Chin We.
Who is Chin We?
My name is Chin We. I am a British Nigerian Multidisciplinary artist. My work explores themes of identity, culture, representation, heritage and the African diaspora through the medium of photography, film, abstract painting and mixed media. I also work as an Art Educator for SEN students. Using art as a powerful tool, I provide both educational and therapeutic support to help students with diverse learning requirements.
What does “Home From Home” mean to you?
“‘Home from home’ represents a sanctuary where I find peace, solace, and comfort. London, where I currently reside, serves as my current ‘Home from Home’.
How do you celebrate your Nigerian heritage?
I celebrate my Nigerian heritage through my artistic endeavours, capturing the essence of Nigerian culture, traditions, and stories in documentary photography, films, abstract painting and mixed media art.
What does being “British Nigerian” mean to you? Being “British Nigerian” is a multifaceted identity that has been shaped by both my birthplace in the UK and my formative years spent in Nigeria. It encompasses a rich blend of cultural influences and experiences that significantly contribute to shaping my identity.
How do you stay connected to your identity? My connection to my identity is deeply rooted in the creative outlets I pursue, which is documentary photography, film, abstract painting and mixed media. In addition to these mediums, I find solace in music, reading, and various other forms of artistic expression. Regularly, I make a point to travel to Nigeria for vacation at least once every two years, immersing myself in the rich culture and heritage that shaped me.
What does culture mean to you?
Culture is life! It embodies the traditions, values, and customs that have a profound impact on our well-being. Culture serves as a vital source of inspiration, stimulating my exploration of the interplay of cultural elements in my work.
What do you imagine the future of the British Nigerian Community to look like in the next few years based on your industry?
I envision the British Nigerian Community evolving into a vibrant hub of artistic expression and cultural exchange. Through my industry, I aspire to foster increased representation and appreciation of British Nigerian heritage.
