Alex Oma-Pius, MA,FRSA, studied Dramatic Arts from the National Academy of Theatre and Film Arts, Sofia, Bulgaria. His love of Theatre-in-Education as a force for social change, encouraged him to form IROKO Theatre Company in 1996. Alex is IROKO’s CEO/Artistic Director.
IROKO Theatre, winners of The Guardian Charity award ‘for innovative approach to education’, uses African theatre art forms as vehicle to enhance learning, skills, health and wellbeing of people of all ages, backgrounds and abilities.
As a facilitator and community theatre director, Alex’s work involves creative curriculum projects in various community settings, educational establishments, professional development centres, museums and other heritage centres. Alex is a visiting lecturer in universities in Britain and abroad, introducing students to African Theatre and Oral Storytelling as part of World Theatre Studies.
Alex is a Consultant on African Arts and Culture and periodically works for renowned institutions like the BBC, the Royal Shakespeare Company, The British Museum, Museum of London.
Alex’s contribution to the cultural life of Britain has been recognised by various bodies, notably the award from the Mayor of London for his “outstanding contribution to the cultural life of Londoners”. Alex is a Fellow of The Royal Society of Arts.
