Chike Azuonye

Chike Azuonye was born in a town called Okigwe in the then Eastern Nigeria, which is now in Imo State. He describes his heritage as Nigerian but having lived in the United Kingdom for a long time, he now describes himself as a British Citizen of Nigerian heritage.

Chike is a graduate of University of Nigeria, Nsukka, where he studied Graphic Design and Painting. He has exhibited widely and has his works in private and public collections. He has also taught art in many schools in London and beyond and has helped deliver arts projects within various organisations.

Chike Azuonye is the vice president and founding member of Nigeria Art Society UK (NASUK), which is a collective of talented Nigerian artists in the diaspora and in Africa.

In this interview, Chike talks about his early life in Eastern Nigeria, the effect of the Nigerian Biafra civil war (6 July 1967 – 15 January 1970) in his life and education, his passion for the arts, life in the UK, and his appreciation of his dual identities as a British-Nigerian. Chike lives and works in London.
