Lekia Lee is an award-winning campaigner and former broadcast journalist, having worked in radio and TV both in Nigeria and the UK. She founded Project Embrace after realising how damaging a lack of representation and narrow beauty standards can be on young women.
The aim of Project Embrace is to nurture an ‘I Am Enough’ attitude, using hair as the tool of empowerment while promoting Afro-textured hair representation and championing diversity in the media and society.
This led to the launch of the #afrovisibility billboard campaign in 2017 in London, followed by other parts of the country. Lekia holds hair workshops for parents and for fathers wishing to nurture a father-daughter relationship, which she believes is vital in building the self-esteem of young black girls.
The Project Embrace Billboard Campaign was nominated for the Diversity in Media Awards Best Marketing Campaign in 2017, won the World Afro Day Social Impact Award in 2018, and the Precious Lifestyle Award for Innovation and Glam Africa Magazine Recognition Award in 2019.
Lekia has been featured on BBC World News, ITV London News, BBC Stories, PinAfrica, talkRadio, BBC 5 live radio, BBC London Radio, Huffington Post, Washington Post, BBC’s The One Show, Stylist and Glamour Magazine.
